GPO & TM Chowk Underpass

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The GPO & TM Chowk Underpass – Rawalpindi is a landmark infrastructure development built to ease congestion and improve safety along one of the city’s busiest urban corridors. Situated on Mall Road, this 1.93 km double-barrel underpass features two lanes in each direction with a height clearance of 5.5 meters, designed to ensure uninterrupted, signal-free traffic flow.

Constructed on 2,091 tangent piles and supported by 46 girders, the project also includes a pedestrian underpass near AFIC, deep wet wells for efficient drainage, 20-foot-wide service roads, pedestrian footpaths, and an intelligent traffic signaling system. Completed in just four months at a cost of PKR 4.6 billion, the underpass opened for traffic on June 30, 2025, as part of the broader signal-free corridor from Ammar Chowk to Motorway Chowk.

Beyond functionality, the project adds to the urban landscape with extensive landscaping, green belts, and over 20,000 newly planted trees, blending infrastructure efficiency with environmental responsibility. This underpass stands as a model of rapid execution, modern engineering, and sustainable development.
