Bhandhar Bridge

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Bhandhar Bridge Expansion Project is a key component of the Islamabad Expressway Expansion Plan, addressing one of the busiest traffic corridors in the capital. The project enhances capacity and safety by widening the existing east-side bridge and constructing a new parallel bridge on the west, creating a dual structure capable of supporting higher traffic volumes and increased load demands.

In addition to the bridge works, the project scope covers the widening of the Expressway to four lanes, along with the reconstruction of critical structures to ensure durability and long-term efficiency. With an approved cost of PKR 10.9 billion, the initiative was launched in September 2022 with an ambitious 18-month completion timeline. Despite facing funding-related delays, progress continues to align with the broader vision of modernizing Islamabad’s transport network.

Once completed, the Bhandhar Bridge and adjoining expansion will significantly reduce congestion on the Expressway, improve commute times between Islamabad and Lahore, and provide a safer, more efficient route for thousands of daily travelers. The project reinforces the capital’s commitment to sustainable urban growth and improved connectivity.
